The Photographic Series started several years ago when I first realized that due to the ubiquitous availability of devices that can take photographs that anyone can now say that they are an artist and by using a good quality, inexpensive printer can produce an edition by selecting a specific number of copies and the printer will generate the photographs. Very easy.
So rather than take a photograph and then determine an edition size of that image like everyone else; I choose to start taking multiple photographs of the same composition to produce a series of unique photographs which appear to be the same. I also established some rules for my Photographic Series. If there is an image that is compelling to me for one reason or another, I take a rapid succession of pictures (almost exclusively with my little Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS) with little time in between pictures to maintain the exact composition or focus and are only shot handheld (no tripod and rarely do I stage the photos). Each image is similar but is never the exact same picture (without intentionally or consciously changing the composition to ensure a difference – it just happens that way).
Each image from The Photographic Series is a unique print in a series of 10 and any subsequent photographs taken at the same time are identified as being an artist proof with a successive number. The images are printed on 13” x 19” archival photo paper using an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer. There is only one image printed for each picture. If purchased, the owner can choose to have a larger image printed but must surrender the original photograph to ensure that only one print exists for that image.
The beauty of the Photographic Series, for me, is not about having a perfect image; it is about having an image that represents a single moment in time.
Due to the focus on uniqueness, The Photographic Series books are not intended to replicate or catalog the series (as they rarely include all of the artist proofs) and they are not the original images, so I consider them to be curated surveys of images from the series and as such, are re-contextualized by the pairings for the purposes of being a book.

The Photographic Series books
The works in this series are all unique photographs taken in rapid succession of the same image, so the resulting images are possibly different from each other due to minor shifts in composition or focus.

Over the course of one evening, the next morning & afternoon, David E. Stone photographed his wife’s orchid plant in their kitchen and resulting images are distinctly different due to the changing light of each part of the day.
ISBN: 9781304738462
On the morning of November 15, 2013, David E. Stone inadvertently knocked off a glass jar of marina sauce off a shelf in his pantry, so he photographed the resulting mess. Two days later, his cat barfed on that same floor in the pantry.
ISBN: 9781304892294
On December 19, 2013, David E. Stone had an ocular migraine which blocked part of his vision with a zig-zag pattern. He immediately photographed a series of images by holding the camera close-up in front of each eye.
ISBN: 9781304892539
A colorful abstracted image of an ice cube from the side of a Coke machine, a handful of yellow plates in a kitchen sink and close-up pictures of packets of Alka-Seltzer are seemingly unlikely subjects but in this book; they become heroic subjects for a red, yellow blue color study.
ISBN: 9781312164550
A row of music Compact Discs on a shelf, close-up pictures of a mirror ball and flags on a clothes line waving in the wind are three distinctly different interpretations of rectangles as the focus for this book.
ISBN: 9781312164871
This book features three subjects where the common denominators in these photographs are domestic imagery and all are devoid of most color except white.
ISBN: 9781312164932
Andy Warhol’s Grave is available to view on a 24 hour webcam and these photos show it with visitors – a family visits on Easter, a woman and man while the camera was in a rare wide angle and two men visiting with snow on the ground.
ISBN: 9781312259065
Andy Warhol’s Grave is available to view on a 24 hour webcam and these photos show it with no visitors – only with Campbell Soup Cans, defaced to become “Dandy Warhols” and very creepy at night.
ISBN: 9781312259010
This book features three subjects which are diverse but each prominently features a primary color – shirts on a doorknob (blue), a fire truck at night (red) and a close-up of an olive in a martini lit by a room lamp (yellow).
ISBN: 9781312261129
Blinds, One Moment Please, and Pink Image (on TV)
This book features three subjects where the images are preventing one from seeing something more – closed blinds and two different instances when a TV transmission was distorted (either with text asking the viewer for One Moment Please or scrambled to become an abstract image).
